The Sultana steamboat disaster of April 27, 1865, is America’s deadliest maritime tragedy. Over 1,800 people perished when the overloaded vessel’s boilers exploded on the Mississippi River. Carrying Union soldiers home after the Civil War, the catastrophe was eclipsed by national events and faded from memory.
